Animals
Animal fouling
Animals fouling on public footpaths and playing fields causes many problems. It can get on your shoes and clothes, or in the worse cases it can lead to blindness due to an infection called 'Toxocara canis'.
Dead animals - removal
The council provides a free service for the removal of dead animals from all public accessible areas and private residential properties.
Fly posting
Fly posting is an illegal, anti-social activity that creates a negative impression of an area and contributes to people's fear of crime.
Fly tipping
Fly–tipping is the illegal dumping of household and trade waste in lay-bys and down quiet country lanes.
Graffiti removal
The council is responsible for removing graffiti on property it owns. We may also be able to organise the removal of graffiti from privately owned property but there may be a charge for this.
Litter
The council's Blitz-it team removes litter, graffiti and waste in South Tyneside. They look after green spaces as well as streets.
Litter bins
The council is responsible for maintaining 4,600 litter bins in the borough.
Public toilets
There are nine public conveniences in South Tyneside, which are situated throughout the borough.
Street cleaning programme
Street cleansing in the borough is arranged on an area basis. The borough is divided into 26 areas and each area has a cleansing attendant.
