After months of build up, a record number of nominations and a tough judging process, South Tyneside’s stars were finally honoured at the sixth annual Pride of South Tyneside Awards, which took place at The Customs House on 10 July 2008. The star-studded event is organised by the South Tyneside Council, The Customs House and The Shields Gazette and celebrates the borough’s unsung heroes and their role in making South Tyneside a special place. There were 10 categories this year. In total, 7 people and two groups walked away with a pride award, with Port of Tyne scooping the judges’ special award for their international successes and their loyalty to improving life in South Tyneside. Our finalists were not the only stars of the show – the awards also saw celebrity presenters gracing the stage to announce category winners. Ant and Dec, Brendan Foster, Gloria Gaynor, Niall Quinn and Kim Tserkezie also sent recorded messages of congratulation to all the finalists, which added to the excitement. The stars of this year’s awardsThe night also showcased South Tyneside’s performing talent with entertainment being provided by the three young performer(s) of the year finalists as well as Lumsdale School of Dance and Bad Taste Crew. Once again, our thanks extend to everyone involved in this year’s awards, especially our family of sponsors who made the whole event possible.
