The borough of South Tyneside includes the towns of South Shields, Hebburn and Jarrow and the villages of Boldon, Cleadon and Whitburn.

The area forms all or part of two Parliamentary Constituencies, South Shields and Jarrow, so is served by two MPs, David Miliband and Stephen Hepburn.

David Miliband has been Labour Member of Parliament for South Shields since June 2001. He was previously Head of the Prime Minister's Policy Unit (1997-2001) and Head of Policy in the Office of the Leader of the Opposition (1994-1997). From 1989 to 1994 he was Research Fellow at the Institute of Public Policy Research, and from 1992 to 1994 Secretary of the Commission on Social Justice.

David Miliband was educated at Haverstock Comprehensive School in London. He graduated with First Class Honours in Philosophy, Politics and Economics from Corpus Christi College, Oxford University, and completed a Masters Degree in Political Science at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, where he was a Kennedy Scholar.

David Miliband edited Reinventing the Left in 1994, and co-edited Paying for Inequality (also 1994). He was a founder of the Centre for European Reform. He is President of South Shields Football Club, and a member of the Whiteleas and Cleadon Social Clubs.

In 2002, David was appointed Education Minister with responsibility for School Standards, in 2004, he moved to the Cabinet Office as Minister of State. Following the 2005 General Election, the Prime Minister promoted David Miliband to the Cabinet with responsibility for Communities and Local Government, in 2006 he became Secretary of State for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs. In June 2007, David was appointed Foreign Secretary by Prime Minister, Gordon Brown.

David Miliband is married to violinist Louise Shackelton. They have two children.

First elected to the British House of Commons in 1997 Mr Stephen Hepburn MP sits for the Jarrow Constituency in Northern England.

For twelve years previously he served as a Labour Councillor for the Bede ward of South Tyneside Council. During that time he was the Chairman of the Finance Sub-Committee, Chairman of the Pensions Committee and Deputy Leader of the Council.

Mr Hepburn was President of Jarrow's UCATT trade union branch from 1982-97 and was Secretary of Jarrow Constituency Labour Party from 1986-97. His political interests include Employment, Health, Education, Transport and Housing.

Mr Hepburn received his education at Springfield Comprehensive School in Jarrow and at the University of Newcastle.
