Genealogy Section

 Since 1st July 1837, all births, deaths and marriages in England and Wales are recorded – at least in theory, by local Registrars. These records are kept in local offices, but every quarter Registrars send copies of their entries to the Registrar General in Southport, where a full set of records for the whole of England and Wales is now held.

If you know that a birth, death or marriage occurred in a particular registration district you can contact that particular Register Office either for a certificate if you have precise details, or for an appointment to conduct a search of the indices, for up to six hours on any one day (check Register Office for current fees). It may take a few days to arrange a search owing to limited accommodation. Copy certificates are cheaper from the local Register Office than from GRO postal applications service.

The records held at South Tyneside Office covers the districts of

  • South Shields
  • Whitburn
  • Cleadon
  • The Boldons
  • Jarrow
  • Hebburn

Births and Deaths registered between the years 1 July 1938 and 31 March 1974 for the Hebburn district are held at Gateshead Register Office.
