About Whitburn

WhitburnWhitburn sits on a beautiful stretch of coastline on the cusp of South Shields and Sunderland.

The South Tyneside village is a designated conservation area, recognised because of its historic and architectural qualities.

The area is regularly recognised in the Britain in Bloom Awards and has a lot of character, with a traditional village green and pond at its heart.

It is home to some really pretty and picturesque residences, plus a variety of shops, restaurants and public houses.

The area has grown significantly in population and stature since its humble beginnings, which can be tracked back as far as 1182 when it was a small settlement with no connecting roads.

In 2007, Whitburn still retains its traditional village charm, but it now has a thriving main street full of interesting shops. Businesses and properties in the area are very sought after.

With over 5,000 residents already making their home in Whitburn, there is a lot of opportunity for local trade. The chemist, butchers, bakers, general dealers, bakery, newsagents and hardware store all provide essential services.

As well as local people, Whitburn is also a honey pot for visitors coming into the area because of its coastal location, picturesque surroundings and interesting history.

The village has famous literary links with the author Lewis Carroll, who holidayed there and is believed to have taken away inspiration for his famous "Alice" novels. A statue of Carroll can be found in the local library in recognition of this association.

At the South Shields entrance to the village sits the National Trust property, Souter Lighthouse, which is a popular visitor attraction. Surrounding the lighthouse is a coastal park that is a regular route for ramblers and dog walkers and has fantastic views.

The village centre really caters for this visitor economy and has an eclectic mix of shops and eateries offering home furnishings, gifts and specialist food as well as good quality coffee and sandwich shops.
